Once inhabited by the Mi’kmaq Nation, whose descendants are the Millbrook First Nation and live there to this day, Truro was settled in the early 1700’s by the Acadians, with further settlers – the Ulster Scots from Ireland – coming in 1761. Over the years Truro (named for a town in Cornwall, England) has been a farming community and a rail town. With a population of just over 12,000 people, Truro is noted for its beautiful 40 tree sculptures (created in commemoration of the loss of the elm trees due to Dutch Elm Disease in the 1990’s). Truro is also home to the Colshester Historical Museum, as well as the only school of its kind in Atlantic Canada, the Nova Scotia Agricultural College.
