Once a city in its own right but now a part of the Halifax metropolitan core, Dartmouth was settled by Protestants in the early 1700’s, and named for the 1st Earl of Dartmouth, William Legge. The settlement began as an important agricultural and sawmill outpost, eventually branching into the shipping industry. Incorporated as a town in 1873, the city of Dartmouth was dissolved and absorbed into Halifax in 1996. Called the City of Lakes due to the 23 lakes within its borders, Dartmouth is known for its Natal Day celebrations and the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, and boasts a population of over 65,000 people.
