Called “Glasbaidh” in Gaelic or “baie de Glace” in French and once the most populated town in Nova Scotia, Glace Bay was originally settled by the French in the early 1720’s. For many years it was a major centre in the coal mining and fishing industries; the Miner’s Museum remains as a tribute to all the men who worked so hard over the years. Another significant monument is the Macroni National Historic Site of Canada, preserved in honour of Guglielmo Macroni, who developed radio communications and sent messages to Poldhu, Cornwall, England in 1902 and also created the first transatlantic wireless communications between Glace Bay and Clifden, Ireland in 1907. Today, Glace Bay is a community within the city of Sydney and boasts a population of over 19,000 people.
