Named for the Dene Nation (called Yellowknife Indians), the area belonged solely to several First Nations peoples for several thousand years. To this day, three primary tongues are spoken outside of English and French – Dene Suleb, Dogrib, and Slavey. In the 1930’s gold was discovered in Yellowknife, and this brought European settlement. By the 1960’s, gold mining was near an end, but in 1991 diamonds were found and became the primary source of the city’s economy. Located on the Canadian Shield, the city experiences all-night twilight from May-July, and the daylight hours begin at a mere 5 hours a day in December until they increase to 20 hours a day in June! With a population of over 19,000 people, Yellowknife is considered the best place in Canada to view the magnificent Northern Lights.
