Once called Canyon City, the region has been the home of many First Nations, including the Tagish, Aishihik, Kluane, Selkirk and Teslin Tlingit Nations, for several thousand years. During the Gold Rush of the late 1800’s many gold “stampeders” came through the area. By 1901 the town was booming with business from the freight trains, and by 1950 Whitehorse was officially incorporated as a city. Home of the Yukon Quest – an annual 1,000 mile sled dog race between Whitehorse and Fairbanks, Alaska (considered to be one of the most difficult such races in the world), Whitehorse is also headquarters for Joint Task Force North (Canadian Forces). With a population of over 23,000 people, Whitehorse is northern Canada’s largest city. |
