Inhabited over 11,000 years ago by Paleo-Indians, whose beautifully made spear heads, axe points and copper tools may still be found, the area later belonged to the Ojibwa Nation. In 1803 Europeans established an outpost in the region known as Fort William, which has since been recreated in an historical park. Other towns and municipalities such as Port Arthur and Shuniah grew up over the years, but in 1969 these were all united to form the current city of Thunder Bay. A noted centre of education, culture and tourism, Thunder Bay has a population of over 108,000 people, and is famous for its “Persians” (cinnamon buns with pink icing, unique to the city) as well as the Bay Street Film Festival. |
