Originally settled by 75 German families in 1794 and known as German Mills, the area was later resettled by several Pennsylvania Dutch Mennonites and named Markham in 1825. During the 1830’s settlers from England, Ireland and Scotland began to arrive, and Markham continued to expand over the next 140 years. In 1972 the village became a town, and it was not until 2012 that Markham became a city. Known for housing over 900 life sciences and technology companies, Markham boasts a population of over 301,000 people and hosts a number of special annual events including the Taste of Asia Festival, Markham Jazz Festival, Milliken Mills Children’s Festival and the Markham Fair.
