Once called Pointe-Lévy and inhabited for over 10,000 years by First Nations peoples, the area was first settled by the French in 1636. In 1861, the City of Lévis was founded, and over the next 150 years several municipalities merged to form Lévis as it is known today. In 1882, Alphonse and Dorimène Desjardins built a beautiful home in which they raised ten children, and in 1900 they founded the Desjardins Group, which has since become North America’s largest association of credit unions. The house is now a popular tourist attraction with an exhibit. With a population of over 138,000 people, Lévis is rich in the arts and history and hosts the famous International Festival of the «Jos Violon» Stories, the Fêtons DON la citrouille à la Ferme Genest and the Les journées de la culture annually. |
