Originally home to the Montagnais Nation, the area was first settled in 1676, when a fur trading outpost was built, which quickly gained more business than all the other outposts in Canada combined. In 1842 it became a city and in 1900 a large pulp mill was developed, around which the city grew. Called the Queen of the North and the Conventions City, Chicoutimi is located in a valley surrounded by the beautiful Laurentian Highlands and is home to the Sanguenay Fjord. The NHL’s Phoenix Coyotes claim their mascot, Pierre the Fanatic Hockey Snowman, comes from Chicoutimi, and the city boasts a population of over 67,000 people. |
