 Known as the “Hub of the North” because it acts as a centre for commerce and politics in the northern Manitoba region, Thompson was inhabited by Paleo-Aboriginals as far back as 6000 years ago. In 1956 a major body of ore was discovered and in 1957 Thompson was founded as a community. With its subarctic climate, it has become a testing centre for cold weather conditions, from automobile manufacturers such as Chrysler, Ford, Hummer and Navistar, and in 2009, the Environmental Test Research and Education Centre (CanETREC) and the National Research Council of Canada partnered to build an aerospace research facility. With a population of over 12,000, Thompson also has the beautiful Spirit Way, a 2 kilometre biking and walking path, strewn with heritage and cultural sites. |
