Founded in 1869 by Father Alberta Lacombe, whose chapel on Mission Hill still stands to this day, St Albert contains many heritage buildings, including two historic Grain Elevators from 1906 and 1929 respectively. Originally inhabited by Métis, the town has a rich Aboriginal heritage and many of the street signs are trilingual, in English, French and Cree. St Albert Place, a remarkable piece of architecture which has no corners, only curves, houses City Hall, the Musée Héritage Museum, St. Albert Public Library, and the Visual Arts Studio and Arden Theatre. The museum contains several thousand historic photographs, records and important artifacts. With a population of over 61,000, St Albert is also famous for its many festivals, including the Northern Alberta Children’s Festival, a multi-cultural delight and one of the longest running on the continent. |
