Used by European fisherman from Normandy, Brittany, Spain and Portugal all the way back to the 16th century, settlement in the area slowly began with influx of English West Country fisherman and their families. Later, the sea port would become a significant base of operations for the seal hunt and Labrador fishery. By the beginning of the 20th century Bay Roberts was known for its shipbuilding and cooperage, and in 1922 the very first mail and passenger combined flight in Newfoundland took place between St John’s, Bay Roberts and Harbor Grace. In 1951, Bay Roberts officially became a town, and boasts a population today of over 5,800 residents.
