Originally part of the “New France” colony of Acadia, the first settlers were French and came in the 17th century, followed over the next 300 years by the English and Scottish. Named in honour of a British Earl, in 1876 the area became important to the forestry and zinc industries with the opening of the Intercolonial Railway of Canada. Completely bilingual, the city is famous for its “ghost ship” legend from the Bay of Chaleur, which states a ship from the Battle of the Restigouche burned just north of the city, and that its ghosts can still be seen sometimes to this day.
